Roatan has grown rapidly in the past 10-15 years, with increased tourism, population, construction and demands on natural resources. When growth happens quickly the environment can suffer, social and health services are stretched and while many prosper, others get left behind.
We are fortunate to have many incredible organizations working hard on Roatan to ease these growing pains. Here are 3 of our favorites, who survive solely through the generosity of donations and grants. Take a look and consider supporting or visiting during your Roatan vacation.

SOL works to initiate and support community-based programs designed to promote education and increase quality of life on Roatan, particularly with the kids. Through the support of grants, donations and local initiatives they are committed to enhancing the standards of education, arts, athletics and diet in less developed areas. School scholarships, counselling, meals, help with uniforms and school supplies and an accessible community center are just some of the programs and services SOL provide……they even organize and support local little league baseball!

The RMP patrols the majority of the Roatan coastline, monitoring and protecting against illegal poaching, anchoring, dredging while installing and maintaining vital marine infrastructure. Through their education programs they reach out to schools and visiting groups, provide literature on reef-friendly practices and offer diving certification courses to local teenagers and young adults looking to enter the industry. Their monitoring of fish aggregations and coral spawning sites provide data to help influence environmental protection laws and allows volunteers to get involved with this work.

This Sandy Bay clinic was established by Peggy Stranges, RN to help address the chronic lack of low-cost, quality healthcare in our community. Now, 20 years on the clinic treats over 28,000 patients annually and provides affordable medication and laboratory testing. The clinic has grown in recent years to offer vital pediatric, women’s health, dental, diabetic and pre-natal care. Clinica Esperanza also assists in sourcing medical supplies for other Roatan health providers and offers support and subsequent positions to newly trained Honduran doctors.
